Organized chronologically, SHOT FROM BOTH SIDES opens each year from 1981 to 1986 with an overview of important historical and political events and notable record, tape, and fanzine releases. Each photo section ends with personal recollections by a diverse group of people and band members, explaining the photos, gigs, and historical background, as well as telling great stories that you won’t hear anywhere else. There is also a carefully selected selection of relevant ephemera and additional photographs, ranging from previously unseen Nick Blinco sketches to flyers, ticket stubs, and set lists from bands large and small.

What overflowed from the zines Paul produced in the 80s was boundless youthful enthusiasm. He was a man who not only wanted to be there and participate, but to share what he loved with as many people as possible. Never one to be swayed by trends, he was equally enthusiastic about the new material of an unknown band that had just finished its debut performance as he was about the latest work of a veteran band. It is no surprise that Paul continues to go to shows, buy records, take photos, and share and participate in the DIY punk community. The editorial approach of this book vividly reflects that passion and gives a rare perspective on the experience of living the British punk scene of the time.

Paul’s documented subjects range from early punk rock bands like Anti Nowhere League and the Adicts, to skinhead bands like Blitz and Major Accident, hardcore punks Discharge and Broken Bones, UK82’s Chaos UK and Disorder, American hardcore bands Black Flag and Hüsker Dü, anarcho-punks Crass and Rudimentary Peni, Rattus, Wretched and Anti-Cimex. It covers everything from hardcore bands to metal-tinged bands such as Onslaught, Sacrilege, and English Dogs. The comprehensive and chronological presentation of the entire evolution of punk is of extreme interest to those who wish to get a clear picture of the evolution of sound and fashion style.

The greatest strength of SHOT FROM BOTH SIDES is that it continues the tradition and passion of Paul’s fanzine by devoting importance and paper to punks, friends, and even unknown bands. Paul continues to capture a slice of history that is often lost in the pursuit of other contemporary punk records that are all about the names that sell. His photographs evolve over the years and as the book progresses, demonstrating his growth as a photographer and highlighting the importance of punk’s ability to empower people of all skill levels to participate. Punk is not just about bands and celebrities. It was a movement that sought to break down the barriers between performer and audience and place equal importance on everyone in the community and on all the participants who made punk possible. Finally, a book has appeared that truly understands its essence.
– Tom Mayhugh/ General Speech

isbn 978-1-0369-0367-1
1st Edition December 1st 2025
Hard back 3mm board
492 pages
232×297 mm
130 gsm silk paper
2.50 kg

Bands: Actus Reus • Adicts • Ad-Nauseam • Amebix • Angelic Upstarts • Annihilated • Anthrax • Anti-Cimex 8226; Anti-Nowhere League • Antisect • Anti System • A.O.A. • Assassins of Hope • Atavistic • A.W.O.L. • A.Y.S. • Bad Beach • Bad Brains • Bad Dress Sense • Black Flag • Blitz • Breaknecks • Broken Bones • Butcher • Chaos • Chaos U.K. • Charge • Chron Gen • Chronic • Commited • Concrete Sox • Conflict 8226; Crass • Criminal Sex • Crucifix • The Cult Maniax • Dead Wretched • Depraved • Destructors • Deviated Instinct • Devoid • Dirge • D.I.R.T. • Discharge • Disorder • D.O.A. • Drongos For Europe • D & V 8226; Eat Shit • English Dogs • Epidemic • Erazerhead • Existenz • Extreme Noise Terror • The Fits • Flux Of Pink Indians • G.B.H. • Generic • Genocide Association • The Genocides • Girlschool • Government Issue • Hagar The Womb • Head Of David • Hells Belles • Heresy • Hüsker Dü • Icon A.D. • Iconoclasts • Icons Of Filth • Impact • Insane and Aborted • Kobra • Kronstadt Uprising • The Legion Of Parasites• Leukaemia 8226; Ligotage • Lita Ford • Major Accident • Marionette • Mau Maus • Menstrual Cycles • Metallica • Miracle Babies • Napalm Death • Nig Heist • Oi Polloi • One Way System • Onslaught • Part 1 • The Partisans 8226; Phallic Symbols • Picture Frame Seduction • Potential Threat • Rabid • Radical Elite • Rattus • Riot/Clone 8226; Ripcord • Rock Goddess • Rubella Ballet • Rudimentary Peni • Sacrilege • The Samples • Scream • Screaming Dead • Sears • The Seats Of Piss • The Skeptix • Skum Dribblurz • Soldiers Of Destruction • Special Duties • Stagnant Era • State Victims • Stigma • Street Walkin’ Creatures • Stupids • Subhumans 8226; Toxic Reasons • U.K. Subs • Van Damme • The Varukers • Vice Squad • Warlock • Wrathchild • Wretched 8226; Youth Brigade •

Contributing authors: Andy | Stagnant Era • Barry | Ad-Nauseam • Baz | Ripcord • Beano | Asylum • Carol | Devoid • Charlie Claesson | Anti -Cimex • Cian | The Legion of Parasites • Con and Paul Larkin | Major Accident • Dave | Butcher • Dave | Head of David • Dave Evans | The Samples • Dave Fergusson | Stress • Dave Floyd | Riot/Clone • David | Existenz • David | One Way System • David Sardy | Radical Elite • Daz | The Commited • Dean and Nick | Rabid • Debbie | Dirge • Deek | Oi Polloi • Dig | Genocide Association • Ed Wenn | Bad Dress Sense • Eno | Lama • Fabietto | Wretched • Fausto Ortenzi aka Frog | Chaos • Gizz Butt | The Destructors • Glib | Dirge • Grant | Rudimentary Peni • Henry Rollins | Black Flag • Ian MacKaye | Minor Threat • Iconoclasts • Icons of Filth • J Robbins | Government Issue • JJ | Toxic Reasons • John Dryland | Cargo Records • Justin Napalm Death • Kalv | Heresy • Kaos | Chaos U.K. • Keith Haynes | Picture Frame Seduction • Lee | Depraved • Levs | Mau Maus 8226; Luca Colombo | Kobra • Mackie | Blitz • Michelle Harding | sister of Dead Wretched guitarist Paul “Bazz” Harding. This is a valuable compendium. It proves that punk still belongs to the punks, not the businessmen. ” Stuart Schrader

“My memory is usually pretty unreliable, and without photographic evidence, I would hardly believe I was even alive in the 80s.” Mid / Deviated Instinct

“Crazy times and great photos!” Justin / Napalm Death

‘The Knotts gig was completely insane.
