This is a far cry from the colorful, noisy, and crowded images that usually depict carnivals. Stevens says he wanted to shift the focus to the source of the music itself, which is what attracts people. It was getting lost in the visual noise,&#8221; he said. The streets that are usually packed with people were empty,&#8221; he said. I arrived early in the morning, just as the set-up was about to begin, and photographed the giant speakers set up in the middle of the street. It was fantastically beautiful, and I thought they should put one on every street corner.<br \/>\nThe Notting Hill Carnival began in 1964 as an expression of the 19th century Caribbean carnival tradition.
